ü  The Anson Community-Shop redistributes surplus food from manufacturers, supermarkets and local people.

ü  Members pay £2.50 for around £12 worth of food items with some household essentials available to buy.

ü  The shop is open every Tuesdays 10am – 2pm at the Anson Community House, 38 Meldon Road, Rusholme, M13 0TR.

Rusholme Social Cafe

Rusholme Social-Café, every Wednesday, 1-3pm at the Birch Community Centre, Brighton Grove, Rusholme, M14 5JT. It is open to everyone and provides a place to meet, chat and enjoy a range of activities for free with help yourself refreshments available for a donation. No need to book (unless stated) – just come along.

Regular activities include crafts, gardening, cooking and reminiscence workshops along with new workshops planned by café members. During the next few months we have the following planned activities:

Rusholme Soup

Join us for the 1st Rusholme Soup on Wednesday 9th March, doors open 6.30 for 7pm start, at Birch Community Centre, Brighton Grove, Rusholme, M14 5JT.

 

Simply make a donation for your supper, listen to the pitches about local projects and vote on which project you would like to see funded.

 

The winner takes the donations from the night to make their community idea a reality.

Busy January!

2016 has got off to a great start with new accredited courses starting in Fallowfield, Gorton and Clayton along with the 1st Rusholme Health Forum. Also we are very busy working with the Anson Residents Association, Fare Share and Eastland Homes / One Manchester coproducing a new community shop project, distributing surplus food.

Here is a few photos from the fantastic Rainbow Haven Food Works projects, providing training and cooking skills for refuges and migrants in Manchester.

NHS England recognition for Healthy Me Healthy Communities

NHS community grant awarded to Healthy Me Healthy Communities

Healthy Me Healthy Communities is one of only eleven organisations to receive an NHS England community grant recognising excellence in patient and public participation.

Healthy Me Healthy Communities has been awarded the grant for its work in developing a community health plan for Rusholme involving GPs, staff, councillors, residents and patients.
HMHC will use the grant to develop resources and material that can be shared through NHS England’s website for the benefit of local and national organisations. This will enable health and voluntary sector organisations from across England to explore good practice and learn from HMHC's successful engagement work.

The Celebrating Participation in Healthcare grants have been made available to community groups who have been demonstrating innovative and creative approaches to getting patients and the public involved in shaping healthcare.

Legacies and Cookery Clubs!

Anson House Cookery Club

Last year Healthy Me Healthy Communities delivered one of our popular Food Skills course at the Anson House covering essential cooking skills and tips for healthy-eating. Some of the participants continued their learning with us and successfully completed the RSPH Food Safety Level 2 qualification arranged by Eastlands Homes.

We were excited to hear about the lasting legacy of our work with the new Anson House Cookery Club and decided to pay them a visit. Starting with about 5 residents, meeting every Monday morning, the Cookery Club now has around 17 resident-members enjoying cooking, eating together and coming together for a chat. All through word of mouth and the smell of lovingly-made casseroles!  When I arrived at the Anson House, Sammy and others were preparing a cooked breakfast with some healthy changes including scrambled eggs and a healthy portion of mushrooms. It was surprising and great to see residents of different ages with young-people and older residents coming together for a community-meal and advice from the local PCSOs. You can see how much it is valued by the pot of money collected from the £2 per week charge for next week’s ingredients.

So how did the Healthy Me Healthy Communities course help with this exciting and much loved new community service? “It inspired us to try new recipes and the confidence to cook for others” says Sammy, adding “and it was fun – we enjoy cooking now”. The outcomes are easy to see with improved confidence, new skills and qualifications along with tackling loneliness for people living around the Anson Estate.

The happy residents settled down to enjoy a home-made breakfast amongst old and new friends talking about their plans for the Cookery Club starting with our baking-skills workshops and ambitions for a community-café – watch this space!

Join us every Wednesday, 12.30 – 3.30pm for a snack-lunch, crafts and reminiscence activities. On Wednesday 8^th July we have fantastic Singpore themed afternoon of crafts, dance and food provided by the wonderful University of Manchester volunteers.

More Food Works

Some great news, we have been successful in securing new funding to pilot the NEW 'Food Works' project building upon our successful Cookery Champions courses. 

The new 'Food Works' project improves 

• health and well-being
• skills
• prospects for finding a job. 

The Healthy Me Healthy Communities Apprentices with learn about healthy-living, practical cooking skills and facilitation skills for delivering community food workshops as volunteers and paid-staff.

We will be starting September in Beswick and Gorton, and we are working hard to secure more funding to expand Food Works across Greater Manchester.
